Get Right With Mike

Mike Collins, B.S. M.S.

Over the past eight years, I have been passionate in my commitment to three things; inspiring others to take an interest in health and wellness, instilling a sense of confidence in both athletes and non-athletes, and maximizing individual performance both athletically and academically.

As a graduate of SIT, I completely understand, and subscribe to SIT academic programming, the various curriculums, and have been able to facilitate and encourage student athletes to achieve academically. I facilitate weekly study halls and have maintained strong relationships with professors, program directors, and the academic liaison. SIT and its STEM programs greatly influenced me when pursuing my undergraduate studies as well as both graduate level degrees in the sports and exercise sciences.

My qualifications include 11 years of coaching. This involved acting as an extension of the admissions office with regard to student recruitment. Due to the fact that SIT is a small Division III school, with no full scholarships, fundraising for our program and the athletic department has also been a huge part of my role at Stevens Institute of Technology (SIT). Therefore, maintaining alumni relations and securing donations has been very important part of the work each year. I have assisted in managing the athletics budget and provided supervision to athletic department staff and work-study students. I have also assisted in the facilitation of local summer basketball camps to foster community involvement. The amazing part of coaching at Stevens, is the ability to give my time there while also pursuing my other passions at the same time.

Currently, As the Youth Director at Basketball City, I oversee over 100 coaches and serve over 2000 kids a year within our Youth Basketball Programs. I have partnered with the NBA and Jr. NBA on a number of adult, youth NBA team events. I work year round with NBA players, Overseas Pros and all levels of youth basketball. We have done some amazing community work throughout the city, as well as in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, which is our local community.

Prior to Basketball City, I was a Fitness Coordinator for a not for profit company, I Challenge Myself (ICM). At ICM, I was able to create a new and improved physical education program for NYC public High Schools teachers and students, called ‘4ToFIT’. This class designed to provide students with the Building Blocks to lead a healthy lifestyle and develop valuable life skills. This program was built to bring student through 4 district phases; Control, Movement, Strength & Power. All 4 phases have a physical and nutrition component to them focused on bringing the best out of each student, one phases at a time.

Previously, I was also the Assistant Director of Recreation at SIT. I oversaw the Fitness Center, the Wellness Classes, as well as, the campus-wide Intramural program. I take pride in assisting in the change process and guiding students through fitness, health, wellness, and higher education.

Along with coaching college basketball at SIT, I was with the Hudson Guild, a very well-known, not-for-profit organization in New York City, as a Recreation Coordinator. I had the opportunity to assist with programming and provide mentorship to adolescents and young adults, ages 14-24. We used basketball and varied fitness workouts as an avenue for successful mentorship. Sports and fitness also served as a distraction for some of the at risk youth within the program.
